Capability contributes to the Scottish Electoral Review Team31/07/2007
Capability Scotland has been campaigning on the issue of accessible elections since 1997. We were therefore delighted to be contacted by the Election Review Team - an independent inquiry set up by the Electoral Commission to examine the problems that marred this year's Scottish election - and invited to meet with officials. We discussed the comments and experiences of disabled voters as recorded in our Polls Apart 5 report - a survey of the accessibility of the 2007 election process. Specific issues highlighted included problems with the ballot paper design which may have contributed to spoilt votes and general confusion over the single transferable vote system.
