Royal visit for Capability Scotland

05/07/2007

One of Scotland’s leading voluntary organisations will celebrate its 60th
birthday with a visit from its patron, H.R.H. The Duke of Edinburgh, on
Thursday 5 July.

Capability Scotland’s royal visit will mark six decades of positive change to
thousands of lives.

Children and adults who currently benefit from Capability’s services have prepared a special performance for the Duke of Edinburgh, and will demonstrate Assistive Technology.

His Royal Highness – who last visited Capability in 1970 – will also unveil a commemorative plaque and view a photo exhibition to chronicle the organisation’s progress, development and achievements.

Originally formed in 1946 as a support group for the parents of children with
cerebral palsy, Capability has since grown into an positive force working for a
just Scotland where disabled people can achieve choice in their everyday
lives.
Earlier this month pupils at Capability’s Corseford School in Renfrewshire scooped a top award at the 2007 Scottish Education Awards in the Active Citizenship category.

The Renfrewshire Work 4 All service also received special commendation at the Care Accolades, organised by the Scottish Social Services Council and the Scottish Executive to reward and promote good practice in social services across Scotland.

A landmark public awareness campaign – the first in a decade – was launched in May to promote Capability’s ‘let’s turn can’t into can’ philosophy and featured disabled people whose lives have been transformed by services provided by the organisation.

Alan Dickson, Chief Executive of Capability Scotland, said: “We are honoured that our patron His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh will be visiting us during our 60th anniversary year.

“It gives us an opportunity to highlight the work we are doing with disabled people across Scotland.

“We hope that as many staff members and service users as possible can join us for what will be an exciting and memorable day.”
