Capability is branching out into the digital age by piloting an innovative new web service aimed specifically at charities.
Staff at Capability Scotland’s Renfrewshire Project Play and Activity Schemes are gearing up for a busy time over the Easter Holidays. The service will be providing playscheme places for up to 151children with additional support needs at venues throughout the area.
A Scottish QC has given his support to Capability’s Barred! campaign.
The Wheelchair and Seating Services Standards and Eligibility Group met for the first time at the end of January. Capability’s Director of External Affairs, Richard Hamer, is chairing the group which has been convened to develop national clinical and service standards for Wheelchair and Seating Services (WSS). It has also been tasked with reviewing the WSS eligibility criteria and developing a quality rating tool.
The Independent Living in Scotland (ILiS) project, is holding several outreach events this spring at venues throughout Scotland, with plans for further events later in the year. The free seminars will explore the concept of independent living and encourage people to get involved.
Advice Service Capability Scotland (ASCS) dealt with over 2000 enquiries in 2009 and 2010 looks like being just as busy. ASCS is a national disability advice and information service which provides free confidential advice and information on a range of disability issues including advice on cerebral palsy, housing and transport.
The Scottish Parliament this week paved the way for new legislation that will help disabled people who are currently unable to get in or out of their houses or use common facilities such as gardens or parking.
Following a successful collaborative project with Scotland’s justice sector in 2009, Capability Scotland is delighted to announce that 2010 will see us working in partnership once again. We have been selected as the Scottish Government’s Key Strategic Partner for housing and will be teaming up with the Glasgow Centre for Independent Living (GCIL) on an ambitious involvment project aimed at radically improving disabled people’s access to suitable housing.
Young disabled people in East Lothian have been offered a ‘Big Plan’ to help them make the move from school into adult life. Capability is working with Edinburgh Development Group (EDG) and East Lothian Council to pilot a new group approach to person centred planning, known as the Big Plan, with eight young people in the area.
Corseford pupils have been working with researchers at Dundee University on a project that shows how joysticks can be used for more than just playing computer games.
