Capability Scotland calls customers to action
31 January 2012
Capability Scotland is calling on its customers to help make sure public services are accessible to disabled people.
Under the new Equality Act every public body in Scotland,
including councils, the NHS, education authorities police and
fire service, is required to set equality outcomes to help it focus
on what steps it needs to take to ensure its services are available
to everyone.
Independent Living in Scotland (ILiS) is organising a series of
free seminars to explain exactly what equality outcome
setting is and outline how disabled people and organisations
can get involved. Many of the events are taking place close to
Capability services so it's a great opportunity for people to have
their voices heard.
The events are being held on:
Wednesday the 1st of February at the Thistle Hotel, Glasgow.
Monday the 27th of February at Raploch Community Centre,
Stirling
Friday 2nd March at North West Castle Hotel, Stranraer
All the events take place between 11am and 3pm and include
lunch. There will be presentations from the Equality and Human
Rights Commission, Disabled People's Organisations and public
bodies.
There will also be the chance to take part in workshops to discuss
the opportunities and challenges around equality outcome setting
for disabled people.
Richard Hamer, Capability Director of External Affairs,
commented: "This is great opportunity for our customers whose
opinion is sometimes overlooked. I hope many will attend these
seminars and make sure their needs are represented."
ILiS project manager Heather Fisken said: "We hope these seminars
will inspire Disabled People's Organisations to get involved with
equality outcomes setting initiatives held by public bodies, make
their voices heard and help achieve real equality in their local
area."
