Capability warns of the impact of Welfare Reform on BBC Politics Show
13 December 2011
Capability Scotland's Director of External Affairs, Richard Hamer, warned once again of the devastating impact the Welfare Reform Bill threatens to have on disabled people in Scotland.
Speaking on an interview for the BBC's Politics Show, Richard
said that, if passed, the Bill could leave 100,000 disabled Scots
without any benefits at all and only people with the most severe
disabilities will see any increase in benefit. He added that those
losing out on benefits could, as a result, lose out on 'passported'
benefits such as a Blue Badge, free public transport and additional
support for carers.
Capability campaigner and volunteer, David Nicol, was also
interviewed and spoke of his fears about how the cuts could affect
his independence and his concerns about the new medical
assessment.
The interview was aired following the publication of a report by
the Scottish Parliament's Health and Culture Committee which
recommended that the Parliament should create Scottish legislation
on Welfare Reform.
