Christmas Eve comes early to Dundee
21 December 2016
Visitors to the official opening of Capability Scotland's Dundee Community Hub time-travelled to the Night Before Christmas thanks to an amazing display of music, drama and artistry by customers and staff.
The Community Hub provides accessible facilities for disabled
people from in and around Dundee who can now experience a wide
range of creative and stimulating activities and skills both at its
City Quay base and in the local community. On 15th
December it was transformed into a real Christmas Wonderland,
complete with all the sights, sounds and scents of Christmas.
We're officially open
Visitors were welcomed by Dana O'Dwyer, Capability Scotland's
Chief Executive and Maryfield councillor Ken Lynn, Chair of the
Integrated Joint Board of the Dundee Health and Social Care
partnership. The Hub was then officially opened by Michael, who has
attended Capability Scotland's Dundee Service for all of his adult
life. Michael, like all of the customers, thoroughly enjoys the new
Community Hub and all it has to offer.
It's the Night before Christmas
Visitors then had a guided tour of the Hub which doubled as a
fantastic showcase for a great array of talent.
The first room had been transformed into a Victorian street
scene complete with a chestnut stand and a wonderful choir of carol
singers who treated their audience to a beautiful rendition of some
In the fully accessible training kitchen, culinary (and acting)
skills were on show as Christmas dinner was being prepared. In the
sensory room, an interactive performance of "'Twas the Night Before
Christmas", demonstrated the wonderful visual and audio technology
and showcased more dramatic skills, including a health-conscious
Santa Claus who declined the pipe provided!
The last room was laid out as a typical living room on Christmas
Eve, complete with two friends talking about what they liked best
about Christmas, including a touching wish for peace in other parts
of the world.
Christmas in the Quay
After a delicious lunch, everyone came together for a
performance of "Christmas in the Quay" which was composed
especially for the occasion by the customers themselves with the
support of our very own Dave Webster.
Gillian Currie, Service Manager, says: "I am so proud of all the
customers and staff here at the Dundee Community Hub. They have put
so much effort into everything from the performances to the
decorations and have demonstrated perfectly the great facility we
have here at City Quay"
