Try a Bus Day 2009

03 June 2009

Capability Scotland is one of the organisation’s behind Try A Bus Day which is taking place at Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh on Tuesday 9th June.

The aim of the day, which has been organised by Ecas, Lothian Buses, First and Stagecoach, is to support disabled people and improve their confidence when it comes to using public transport. The tram mock -up will also be there.

A nationwide poll by the DRC revealed that disabled people are four times more likely to lack confidence using buses and trains than non disabled people.  The poll, undertaken by TNS, of 7,298 British people – including 1600 in Scotland – found that over 40% of disabled people aren’t confident taking an unplanned journey on an unfamiliar route – twice the figure for non-disabled travellers.

Buses have changed a lot in recent years and are now far more accessible.  The latest buses, supplied by Lothian, First and Stagecoach, will be at Ocean Terminal between 10am and 4pm on the day for people to try boarding and disembarking.  Managers, drivers and other bus users will be available to talk to about any concerns passengers may have.  There will also be information stalls for other charities and bus operators.
