Sign the UN Convention petition on No 10 website15/07/2008
Capability Scotland is part of the campaign for the ratification of the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities without reservation.
The Government has indicated that they will ratify the Convention by December 2008, but has indicated that it will make reservations to certain aspects of the Convention. The campaign is currently engaged in lobbying the Government and working with officials to avoid reservations being made.
We are asking as many people as possible to sign a petition on the 10 Downing Street website which calls for the ratification of the treaty without reservations.
The Convention, which is the first human rights treaty of the 21st century asserts:
• the right of disabled people to enjoy the full spectrum of human rights deemed essential for other people, including economic rights;
• that the inequality faced by disabled people is a result of the "interaction" between individuals and the social, economic and cultural barriers that are put in their way;
• the right of disabled people to exercise choice in their lives; and
• the multiple strands of inequalities that disabled people face on the basis of gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity etc.
Capability Scotland’s Campaigns, Parliamentary and Policy Manager, Faye Gatenby said: ”This is an important piece of international law, and it seeks to be a policy rather than a principles-based document by linking into the law and policy process of individual countries and working from a general belief that deprivation and poverty are major barriers to disabled people in fully exercising their human rights.”
