Party time at Upper Springland

05/07/2007

A Perthshire service for disabled adults is throwing a party this Friday (6th July). Service users and staff at Upper Springland in Perth are celebrating the 60th birthday of Capability Scotland.  Upper Springland is one of many services provided by Capability Scotland across the country.

Provost John Hulbert JP and Capability Scotland Chief Executive, Alan Dickson, will be VIP guests at the celebrations which will include a birthday cake, sword fighting displays, live music and games.

From its beginnings as an Edinburgh-based support group for the parents of children with cerebral palsy, Capability Scotland has become a force for positive change in practice, policy and attitudes towards disabled people. Capability Scotland is now recognised as one of the country’s leading disability organisation’s and works with children, adults and families living with disability to support them in their everyday lives.

Upper Springland has played a key part in the organisations history.  It is 28 years old and provides a residential service to 61 people and a day service to a further 25 people. The service also has a resource centre offering a variety of activities as well as a respite unit.  In addition there is a coffee shop and gallery which is open to the public.

Service Manager, Deirdre Moss commented:  “Everyone at Upper Springland is looking forward to celebrating Capability Scotland’s 60th birthday.  Over the last 60 years we have seen many positive changes in attitudes, policy and practice which have been achieved through working with disabled people.  Upper Springland is proud to have been part of that process.”
