Housing Partnership

Housing is key to independent living, without a house it can be impossible for disabled people to access employment, education or even social and recreational opportunities. However, many disabled people face significant barriers when it comes to finding somewhere to call home.

"I found the housing conference very valuable, informative, thought provoking and well worth attending."
Andy Jack, Assist Architects

Capability and the Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living (GCIL) were selected through the Housing Voluntary Grant Scheme as the Scottish Government's key strategic partner for housing and disability issues.

Throughout the autumn of 2010, Capability ran a  series of involvement events bringing together the experience of disabled people from across Scotland to raise awareness of the housing issues they currently face.

Using the lived experience of disabled people as a benchmark, we have identified barriers and suggested solutions to influence the implementation of both existing and future housing legislation, policy and practice. We have published the reports of these events and they can be accessed through the links on the right. We have also written a combined report of all seven events, which consolidates the views expressed at the events and draws out themes.

"The housing conference was a brilliant event that brought housing organisations and the community together to look at disabled people's needs in today's housing market."
Jackie Maceira, disabled participant

In February we held a major conference, bringing together disabled people and housing professionals to find solutions to the problems highlighted during the events.  Find out what delegates thought of the conference here. You can access the report of the conference through the links on the right.

Capability and GCIL are continuing to work with the Scottish Government on housing and disability issues throughout 2011/2012.
