Talking mats
Self expression is a key element in Capability's drive towards
equality and choice. One key tool in helping the people that use
our services express their views and make clear choices on a range
of topics is Talking Mats.
Essentially, Talking Mats provide a visual framework that uses
picture symbols to help people with communications difficulties. It
has been developed over the last ten years by the University of
Stirling's Augmentative and Alternative Communications team, with
significant input from Capability along the way.
Talking Mats can be used in many creative ways:
- To get feedback on the quality of the service. This will help
plan and improve the services that Capability provides.
- Preparation for Reviews. The individuals that use our services
can prepare in advance of reviews by working with their support
workers to make choices about the subjects they want to
discuss.
- Feedback on the Activities offered in Day Services. This will
help plan and improve future Activity programmes.
- The individuals that use our services can be involved in the
recruitment process by making choices about staff they need.
